Surviving and Thriving in America

Lao Vision - Summer 2003, Volume 7, Issue 1This is an exciting issue indeed! This year's Summer issue contains fresh work from a new and diverse Lao Vision staff. Surviving and Thriving in America reminds us of our history, challenges, and demonstrates how the Lao have survived and succeeded in their new lives in the Americas. This issue was written not just for our promising youth, it rejoices in the successes of our Lao professionals, and also peeks into the eyes and minds of our much respected elders. Lao Vision's Summer 2003 Issue is dedicated to all those who give color, depth, and pride in being Lao.

A
s one of the last waves in the refugee pool of this country, our Lao community faces scores of issues, and yet, so far we have not seen any publication that specializes in the Laotian community and its needs on a national scope. Therefore, Lao Vision is excited and takes pride in being the pioneer on this path of communal construction. The core of our staff is composed of Lao students and professionals who volunteer their talents as a service to the Lao community nationally and internationally. We have staff members who reside from varying regions of the nation: the West Coast, the Midwest, the Southwest, and the East Coast.

Our objectives:
  • To create a forum for Lao individuals to share and exchange experiences through fictional/non-fictional prose and/or poetry, where social issues can be raised and discussed.

  • To stress the importance of education, which will be focused in our Education Section, where Lao individuals in the field can contribute articles pertaining to their expertise. Furthermore, there will be a continual list (virtual internet directory) of Lao college students and professionals whose desire is to create and expand the network of higher learning for all Lao. Most importantly, this list will be the communication link for new learners in our Lao community.

  • To raise awareness among our Lao community about imperative issues, such as the generation gap, racial concerns, acculturation experiences (includes cross-cultural), and the path of all Lao people in their new settlement.

Lao Vision Magazine, "Valasaan Sieng Lao" (Magazine of Lao Voices), raises public awareness in the aforementioned issues and much more. In order to continue this milestone, we need assistance from the public via donations or advertisement, so we can continuously distribute our publication to the public free of charge. We welcome your comments and ideas; we look forward to hearing from all of you.
